A given review article is dedicated to the 75th anniversary of C. M. Zener’s published work ‘Internal friction in solids. Theory and experiment’. А historical aspect of research in the field of mechanical spectroscopy in Ukraine, Russia and other countries is discussed. The major international conferences and symposia on this problem as well as the most important scientific results on investigation of processes and mechanisms of the energy dissipation of mechanical vibrations in solids are reviewed.
Keywords: elasticity and inelasticity in solids, internal friction, mechanical spectroscopy, mechanical energy scattering, dislocation structure.
