A hypothesis of the isothermal-martensite occurrence in carbon steels is proposed within the scope of the relaxation model of martensite formation. According to a hypothesis, the appearance of martensite is conditioned by the incompleteness of relaxation processes of thermoelastic stresses after the quenching under cooling up to the cryogenic temperatures.
Keywords: isothermal martensite, relaxation, thermoelastic stress.
